PARKING REQUIREMENTS FOR VANCOUVER RESTAURANTS

The methods and results are discussed of a review of bylaw parking reqruirements for restaurants in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The review included on-street and off-street surveys, interviews with restaurant proprietors and patrons, regression analyses, and consultation with the restaurant industry and the City Planning Department. The details are described of the data collection, the data analysis, and other considerations. The study found that parking demand correlates better with restaurant GFA (gross floor area) than with the number of seats. Quality restaurants and fast-food restaurants have similar parking demands. Other findings regarding the following are also listed: drive-through service; amendments to the bylaw; parking demand in non-CBD (central business district) areas; and restaurants on small sites.
