A dramatic increase in accident rates produced by increased bicycle use prompted an extensive Bicycle Safety Study followed by a manual for bikeway planning and design. Community needs and goals must be determined, and the organization of the study selected. Data must be collected to determine road user desires, accident statistics, travel demand and forecast, and projections of bikeway volume. The information must be converted into a defined bikeway plan, encompassing environmental and social impacts, cost analyses and policy direction. The design of bikeways entails considerations such as geometrics, parking, drainage, location, signing, lighting and pavement design. Upon completion of the bikeway system, evaluation should include bicycle traffic volume, citizen response, and subsequent accident statistics. /HRIS/
