LINEAR MOTOR DRIVEN RAILCARS FOR SMALLER CROSS SECTION SUBWAY TUNNELS

This paper reports on a new linear motor driven railcar, supported by steel wheels, and capable of running through lines with steep gradients and sharp curves, in subways of smaller cross section tunnels. It has enabled a reduction in the construction costs of subway tunnels, and has been successful in test running for the first time in Japan. The initial targets established for this linear motor driven railcar have been achieved, and an outlook for practical use has been obtained. The paper describes the research and development background of this linear motor driven railcar, as well as principal technologies, such as linear motors, reaction plates, and inverters.
