A HISTORY OF THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY 1933-1983

The author draws on his personal experience of the TRRL to describe the evolution of the laboratory, outlining policy and management issues as well as the research work. He tells how from small beginnings as an experimental outstation of the Ministry of Transport Roads Department, and later as the Road Research Laboratory in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Laboratory has come to play a significant and important role in the development of road transport, both nationally and internationally. Research was mainly concentrated on road materials and construction until 1939 when it was turned to the war effort. At the end of the war road research was resumed with the addition of important research into road traffic and safety. Thereafter research into pavement design, roads in the tropics and bridges was carried out while in 1972 the scope of the laboratory was further extended to include transport research. (TRRL)
