ROAD ACCIDENT - A SITUATION FOR THE RESCUE SERVICE
OLYCKA PA VAEG - EN INSATSSITUATION FOER RAEDDNINGSTJAENSTEN
Rescue operations by fire brigade personnel in traffic accidents has been studied for ten local authorities in Sweden ranging in size from 120,000 down to 4,000 inhabitants. A comparatively simple method of evaluation has been used with rescue performance being measured as survival rate among persons seriously injured. The study points to two circumstances of importance for obtaining good rescue results. First, it is important to have the rescue team arrive early at the scene of the accident. The time between an accident and the start of a rescue operation seems to be more important than the time taken by the operation. Further, a rescue team's former experience of technically advanced traffic rescue work seems to play a vital role for obtaining good results.
