ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SEMI-EMPIRICAL THEORIES OF THE TUBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER: SURVEY REPORT

The known semi-empirical theories of the turbulent limiting layer in compressible and incompressible fluids are analyzed. Various hypotheses concerning the distribution of the mixing length across the layer and the coefficient of turbulent viscosity, the thickness of the laminar sublayer, the form of the polynomials for the distribution of the tangential stresses across the layer, are considered. Also considered are the basic premises of the semi-empirical methods for computing the turbulent boundary layer based on the use, along with the equations of turbulent energy balance or the equation for the conservation of second momenta combined with some additional hypotheses for determining the turbulent viscosity, the diffusion coefficients, and the dissipation of turbulent energy.
