In this paper, the engineering properties of the inferior clayey soil were studied from the physico-chemical points of view. The organic matter, considered as the origin of the inferiority of the clayey soil, mainly causes a large and delayed compressibility of the soil but also causes an increase in the shearing strength. The mechanisms of the inter action between the clay minerals and the organic matters were revealed. To improve this inferior clayey soil, a new soil stabilization method using an inorganic substance, iron powder, was introduced. The main effect of the treatment was found to be the increases in the shearing strength and the rigidity of the samples due to the bonding of soil particles and trivalent iron cations from the added iron powder.
