USE OF ARCH EFFECT IN CIRCULAR RETAINING DIAPHRAGM WALL. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985

SOUTENEMENT D'UNE FOUILLE PAR UNE PAROI CYLINDRIQUE

Three excavations, 88 m in diameter and 20 m in depth, were carried out in hydraulic fills and quarternary clays and sands during the construction of the Methanier terminal in Zeebrugge. The support and peripheral watertightness was ensured by a nearly circular slurry trench wall, 1.2 m thick, which has hardly any reinforcement. An internal concrete reinforcement was poured in-situ as the excavation progressed. Detailed studies were conducted in order to forecast the behaviour of this exceptionally large structure. The displacements measured during excavating operations agreed with the predicted displacement. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (TRRL)
