INVESTIGATION ON A STRUCTURAL MODEL OF THE S.S. OCEAN VULCAN

An investigation to establish a structural model technique which may be used with confidence in the design of ships' structures is described. To validate the model techniques it was advantageous to compare the behavior of a ship and its model. The SS Ocean Vulcan was chosen for this purpose because extensive full-scale measurements had already been made. The model was subjected to longitudinal and horizontal bending and torsion by forces applied at bulkheads. Longitudinal bending was also applied by floating the model in water. Good overall agreement is found between the full-scale and model results. The design of the model is discussed.
