STEERING AND MANOEUVRING OF SHIPS. FULL SCALE AND MODEL TESTS
After an introduction, various full scale tests for the assessment of steering and maneuvering qualities of ships are briefly described. Phase plane analysis of the zigzag test is mentioned. Different types of model tests are described, especially the Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) technique, including the mathematical model. A new PMM with unusually large amplitude is outlined. Results of PMM tests with 35 various models are presented, and trends are developed of the influence of some ship dimensions on the course stability.
