AIR VOIDS VERSUS PRD (PERCENTAGE REFUSAL DENSITY)

Three types of end result bituminous compaction specifications are defined, along with a review of recent research into the performance benefits of improved site densities. Methods of density measurement are also discussed in conjunction with a detailed description of the air voids and percentage refusal density specifications and their application. Test data from a contract on A19 (T) at Riccall, North Yorkshire, is used to compare the two specification methods when applied to roadbase and basecourse macadam. The authors then consider the advantages and disadvantages of each method and investigate the potential performance of macadams at various binder contents and compaction levels. (Author/TRRL)
