SPECIFIC METHODS FOR THE SOLUTION OF CLASSICAL PROBLEMS IN THE USE OF MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING MODELS

Main problems generally encountered in the application of mathematical models to urban and regional planning are indicated. There is a dicussion of the handling of problems by well-known generally used methods; time span and costs involved to develop integrated models? and the difference between management science and the decision making process. In practice some tools were developed in order to overcome the difficulties mentioned. The discussion in this paper is specifically focused on the transportation aspects of these models. Suggestions are made that the so-called optimum solutions of linear programming models have to be seen rather as a basis for discussion and better results in the future than as a fixed and immovable result. Using lp-models in this way requires specific responsibilities of the experts involved in the decision making process. /TRRL/
