GEOTECHNICAL AIRPHOTO INTERPRETATION OF DEPTH RELATIONS WITHIN CLAY DEPOSITS

GEOBILDSTOLKNING AV MAEKTIGHETSFOERHAALANDEN INOM LEROMRAADEN

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether there is a general relation between topography and depth within clay depositional areas. The application of this relation to geotechnical airphoto interpretation and at which depths it is applicable has been studied. It is shown that the ground surface topography is clearly influenced in the 2 to 5 m thickness interval while in general it is very little influenced for greater thicknesses. By airphoto interpretation it is shown to be possible to map the relative depth conditions within clay areas and the result can be used directly in urban planning. The interpretation results cannot be used for choice of foundation method. Air photos taken in early spring before crops and vegetation cover the clay surface and before the surface dries up give the best information. Black and white panchromatic film is suitable for most purposes. /TRRL/
