COMMUTING IN AMERICA. A NATIONAL REPORT ON COMMUTING PATTERNS AND TRENDS
In an effort to provide an objective factual resource to support the activities of public and private sectors impacted by the changing commuter demand, new commuting patterns are extensively detailed. Three primary themes permeate the analyses: the worker boom; the suburban commuting boom; and the private vehicle boom. Important new trends are identified that also have substantial implications in the areas of traffic operations and management, transport system planning and development, transit routing and system planning, government organization and programs, and metropolitan form, development, and governance. The need is indicated for a new metropolitan strategy focussed on needed public policies and private understanding in these areas. Areas for future research are indicated.
