BUS DEREGULATION AND COMPETITION: A SURVEY OF INDEPENDANT OPERATORS

This paper reports the results of a survey of independent bus operators in North West England. It is shown that despite a number of reservations the operators seem broadly satisfied with the way deregulation is working and with the tendering procedures. While there have been examples of behaviour by existing large firms which may have deterred or delayed entry, the responses appear to suggest that the independent sector will play an increasing role in the operation of both commercial and subsidized bus services even though the ambitions of many of the independent operators remain fairly modest.
