STUDY ON THE PREVENTION OF BRITTLE FRACTURE OF WELDED JOINTS OF OFFSHORE STRUCTURES
From the results of cross joint notch tension test and T-type fillet notch tension test, the safety factor against the brittle fracture initiation will inevitably be very much lowered when the notch, the welding residual stress and the stress concentration due to the structural discontinuities overlap. The welding has to be conducted carefully not to allow any welding defects and the defect inspecting to be carried out strictly. It is desirable to adopt partial stress relieving annealing or other means of relieving the welding residual stress.
