INFLUENCE OF SWEDISH BUILDING LIME ON THE PROPERTIES OF FINE GRAINED SOILS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION

This investigation contains comparative laboratory tests of four cohesive soils, both with and without three different kinds of lime. Apart from the usual tests for determination of the stability effect of the lime, fairly comprehensive freeze tests were performed in order to determine the frost-heave tendency of lime-stabilized soils. According to the results, the stabilization effect showed only minor differences depending on the type of lime (siluric-, chalky- orthoceratite-). The frost susceptibility was found to increase for the clayey soils with increasing lime content, caused by the increased permeability. The silty fine sand on the other hand was found to be less frost susceptible by the lime stabilization. The author points out that it is necessary to perform full scale in situ tests for proper knowledge of the frost susceptibility of lime stabilized soils. /TRRL/
