BS76:1974 SPECIFICATION FOR TARS FOR ROAD PURPOSES

This revision of the british standard for tar for road purposes is more specific than earlier revisions. Some tests have been omitted in the interests of rationalization and other changes made to bring it into line with current practice. It also includes two new performance tests (the segas test and the beckton tray test). After stating the scope of the standard, which covers surface dressing tars and coated macadam tars, the standard defines the terms used. The properties required of the tar for both purposes are set out in a comprehensive table, covering viscosity, water content, distillation yield, softening point of residue, beckton tray test results and density. The standard includes details of methods of sampling to be used under various conditions and a compliance clause which refers to the repeatability of the test method. A series of comprehensive appendices give specifications of the test methods to be used, including sample preparation, evt measurement, water content determination, distillation method, ring and ball test, beckton tray test, segas test, the determination of insoluble matter, and density determination. The standard also includes a bibliography, specifications of the thermometers used and a chart showing relationships between evt, viscosity and penetration. /TRRL/
