EMULSION PRACTICES IN NEW ZEALAND WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SEALING AND MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. BITUMEN EMULSION WORKSHOPS; PROGRAM AND PAPERS, MELBOURNE, 10-11 OCTOBER 1985 AND SYDNEY, 15-16 OCTOBER 1985

Chip sealing with hot bitumen and cut backs is a well proven, well established, and highly competitive construction practice in New Zealand and the requirements for bitumen roading emulsions must be considered against this background. This paper describes major uses of emulsions in New Zealand and refers also to some manufacturing and distribution problems. Emulsions are mainly used in areas where their special properties make them almost essential to the job. These areas are largely traditional as more specialised techniques have not yet gained a foothold in our small market. The main fields covered are the use of diluted anionic slow set emulsion as a cure coat membrane for cement and lime stabilised bases and as a compaction aid and surface binder in basecourse construction, the use of quick breaking emulsion in seal coats, with particular emphasis on flush coat seals and two coat cationic seals in the winter, and the use of cationic medium set emulsions in the production of open graded patching materials, pre-mixed in large central plants or in small concrete mixers at local depots and yards. For the covering record of the workshop see IRRD 283860. (Author/TRRL)
