CRACK PROPAGATION UNDER VARIABLE LOAD HISTORIES IN LINEARLY VISCOELASTIC SOLIDS

Starting from the local stresses and deformation field at the tip of a crack and the first law of thermodynamics a nonlinear differential equation is derived for the crack tip velocity in dependence on an arbitrary history of the crack tip stress intensity factor. Conditions for the simplification of this differential equation are discussed. The relevance of these calculations to the mechanical behavior of composite solids is pointed out. The case of cyclic loading (fatigue problem) is discussed in detail.
