STUDY OF SOME METHODS OF DETERMINING THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GRANULATED SLAG

ETUDE DE QUELQUES METHODES DE DETERMINATION DES CARACTERISTIQUES PHYSIQUES DES LAITIERS GRANULES

The author recalls that granulated slag is increasingly used in road construction for stabilizing roadbases of all types of highway, even heavily-trafficked roads and motorways. For a judicious use of the slag, it is necessary to know its physical characteristics and their influence on its hydraulic properties. This three-part thesis deals with methods of determining the physical properties of slag. Part 1 outlines different tests used to characterize granulated slag. Chemical, granulometric and microscope analyses are successively studied together with its specific surface by the blaine and bet method, structural analysis by radiocrystallography and microanalyzer, and friability. The second part deals with testing equipment. Details are given of an installation devised by the author to sample granulated slag under specific conditions of granulation. The last and third part examines the interpretation of test results. Several slag samples were characterized by means of the tests cited above and the author attempted to establish a correlation between the physical properties defined in each test and granulation conditions. /TRRL/
