INFLUENCE OF THE EVENNESS OF ROAD SURFACINGS ON THE COMFORT OF MOTOR VEHICLES

INFLUENCE DE L'UNI DES REVETEMENTS ROUTIERS SUR LE CONFORT DU VEHICULE AUTOMOBILE

The research described in the thesis is threefold: (1) development of 4 mathematical models of a vehicle for two main vehicle movements (rolling and pitching). The road is defined by a mathematical model which expresses the differences between classes of existing roads. A numerical application is performed on 3 types of french cars, limits of acceptable acceleration being established; (2) analogue study. Two analogue programs are developed to study the two main vehicle movements (rolling and pitching) taking into account given aspects of the suspension except the rubber components. The road is represented by a signal obtained with the lcpc longitudinal profile analyzer; (3) experimental study: tests are carried out on some routes with two french cars. The aim of the investigation is (1) to verify the validity of the analogue or numerical models used and (2) to study the real influence of the evenness of the surfacing on the vehicle. A comfort criterion is defined which is based on the spectral density concept; it takes into account the amplitude and frequency of vertical accelerations. Numerical definitions of vehicles and "comfortable" roads are given. A bibliographic study of the effect on vibrations on the human body is included. /TRRL/
