STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF ROADS WITH FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

DISENO ESTRUCTURAL DE CARRETERAS CON PAVIMENTO FLEXIBLE

A semi-empirical method for the design of flexible road pavements is presented. It is based on the research conducted through the Institute of Engineering (experimental test roads, evaluation of existing highways, and circular test-track) from 1962 to 1973. The method assumes that the road structure is properly simulated by a multilayer solid of uniform relative strength, in which the logarithm of the strength is proportional to the logarithm of the cumulative number of 18 kip single axle loads. The experimental correlation is highly satisfactory. Design curves include numerous variables, which should be analyzed within a general framework to arrive at economic solutions. It is considered that the method is reliable and it is not difficult to emply. Through its use in practice and with the help of the research underway, necessary adjustments can be made.
