FAILURE OF A LARGE HIGHWAY CUTTING AND REMEDIAL WORKS

The construction of the A08 motorway in southeastern France, near the Italian border, involved the excavation of a large cutting, the slopes of which reach up to 40 m. Several slides occurred on these slopes while the work was being carried out and just after the motorway was opened to traffic. This report describes the slides, the investigations undertaken, and the remedial measures applied to ensure the stability of this large cutting. Emphasis is placed on the difficulties encountered during the investigation in a site of very complex geological structure containing remoulded, weathered or fissured soil, and on the practical approach used, which consisted in the back analysis of a characteristic slide before planning remedial operations.
