RIDESHARING IS CRITICAL IN CONTROLLING CONGESTION

A major regional effort is underway to promote an important resource--a network of 11 government ridesharing programs known as the Ride Finders Network, coordinated through the Council of Governments (COG). Of the more than 25,000 commuters who applied to the Ride Finders Network in 1987, those who traveled long distances or worked downtown were more apt to join car or van pools. In all, 7,600 commuters began to share rides through the activities of COG's Network in 1987. These findings are taken from the "1987 Survey and Evaluation of Ride Finders Ridesharing Network," the biennial survey of Network performance. Other benefits for the metropolitan Washington region were: the elimination of 2.9 million vehicle trips; a savings of 3.8 million gallons of gasoline; and the elimination of 2,612 potential parking places. An additional and critical benefit to the success of the program was the dollar savings: almost $10 million region-wide. Also included in the report was an analysis of the Ride Finders applicants and their commuting characteristics.
