In the first chapter the author defines the terms commonly used throughout the book: light-weight, semi-heavy and normal concrete. The advantages and disadvantages of light-weight concrete are reviewed together with its history. Statistics are presented on light-weight aggregates and cellular concrete. The second chapter deals with the /TRRL/ design and use. Chapter 3, the most important, studies the various types of light-weight aggregates and their corresponding concretes, mentioning first their common properties (shape, bulk density, particle size distribution, quality control, strength, porosity, concrete mix design), then different light-weight aggregates and the concretes of which they form part (expanded clay, brick rubble, sintered fly-ash, expanded slag, clinker, perlite, expanded polystyrene, pumice, pozzolan, expanded shale, aggregates derived from plants, vermiculite, no-fines concrete, and light-weight concrete containing plastic foam or synthetic resin). Chapter 4 discusses cellular concrete (aerated concrete, foamed concrete). In chapter 5 the technical characteristics of light-weight concrete are studied: bulk density, thermal and mechanical characteristics, variations in dimensions, water absorption, equilibrium moisture content, resistance to frost, rate of drying, acoustic properties). Chapter 6 deals with the manufacture laying and curing, prefabricated panels, structural members and various uses). The book ends by giving a list of publications on the subject: french specifications (afnor and dtu regulations), us specifications (astm and aci standards), bs specifications and british standard codes of practice, din german specifications, USSR gost standards, and numerous bibliographic references.
