THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL ANTI-LOCK BRAKING REGULATIONS

Antilock braking systems for road vehicles in Europe should satisfy the design, construction and performance requirements prescribed in Annex 13 of the UN/ECE Regulation No 13. This paper traces the historical and technical development of Annex 13, from its inception as a German proposal in 1972 to its eventual publication in 1979. The subsequent re-assessment of Annex 13 in the light of new antilock developments has culminated in the finalisation of a new Annex 13 this year, which has also been adopted within the EEC Braking Directive 71/320 as Annex x.
