DESIGN RULES FOR STEEL STRUCTURES

REGLES DE CALCUL DES CONSTRUCTIONS EN ACIER

The present rules confirm the probabilistic nature of structural safety. In the former rules, an attempt was made to reach the degree of safety required either by taking into consideration underestimated permissible stresses (sigma coefficient) or by taking into account overestimated stresses (rule of additional control). The present rules, in agreement with the recommendations put forward by the european convention for metal structures, follow the latter. They are characterized by the introduction of weight coefficients applied to stresses, each type of stress having a specific coefficient for the chosen combination of random loads and surcharges. New notions were introduced concerning stability during erection, high-strength, bolt assembly, and the stability of thin components. /TRRL/
