CONDITION OF STEEL CABLE AFTER PERIOD OF SERVICE
The condition of the interior of a 3-1/4 in. steel cable after approximately 20 yrs in service is described. The cable studied was one of 21 bridge strands that support a very large radio telescope. It had suffered minor surface wire breakage and was replaced for testing and dissection to provide information needed for judging the condition of the entire cable system, and ensuring long-term satisfactory operation of the telescope. Very little information has been published on the condition of cables after a period of service. The paper is presented in the interest of partially filling this gap in the information needed for estimating the service life of steel structures.
