ESTIMATES OF CURRENT HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FLOW PATTERNS
This article presents estimates of hazardous materials tons and ton miles by mode which were generated in a recent study by the Office of Technology Assessment. The statistics serve as a bench mark for current analysis and a starting point for future work, possibly developed from additional information such as the state-based highway flow databases currently being collected and national data collection efforts now being proposed. Truck-based flows, marine, and air transport are covered in detail. The quality of the existing data is very mixed. The root cause for the deficiencies in information stems from the data collection practices of the federal and state govenments. The need for comprehensiveness in the census of transportation is emphasized, along with consistency in the quality of data from one mode to another.
