WORLD BULK CARRIER MARKET
The main objective of the survey is an assessment of the future pattern of employment, DWT requirement and newbuilding demand for bulk carriers and specialized ore carriers between 20,000 DWT and 200,000 DWT. Analyzes historical trends in the demand for bulk carriers over 20,000 DWT, highlighting the increasing share of the total dry bulk trade transported by single-deckers. Demand obviously depends on international trade and to produce actual and projected trade flows for 1972, 1976 and 1980, the survey deals with the development of seaborne trade in the following dry bulk commodities: iron ore, coal, grain, bauxite and alumina, phosphate rock and manganese. A method, based on the efficiency of different sizes of bulk carrier, was used to quantify overall DWT requirements in 1980, as well as those of individual commodities and trades. The past growth of the world bulk carrier fleet is examined along with various aspects of bulk carrier availability. The existing order book is analyzed, significant data on the fleet's age composition, draft distribution, ownership (or control) also being presented. The DWT requirements estimated for 1980 are compared with the existing fleet of bulk carriers over 20,000 DWT in order to assess the potential demand for newbuildings. Newbuilding prices and other cost elements affecting the operation of bulk carriers are projected to 1980 to determine what effect the escalation of costs will have on competitiveness of the most popular classes. Operating cost characteristics of the various size groupings are closely examined, both in the text and through a series of tables. The concluding section covers the management - cm - marketing problems which owners and operators of bulk carriers face in an increasingly competitive market and the way in which these have been overcome.
