HIGH STRENGTH STEEL IN OIL TANKERS AND BULK/OBO CARRIERS FROM A WEIGHT POINT OF VIEW

Systematic analyses of the hull steel weight of ships with the hull being built of high strength steel have been carried out. By high strength steel is here meant steel with controlled yield point sigma sub y greater than or equal to 27kp/mm squared, the normal Det Norske Veritas Rule (12) degree term being KF-steel. The analyses have been performed by means of Det Norske Veritas classification rule programs (CBC-programs), and the infleunce of the extension of the KF-steel and the yield point were taken into account. On the basis of these studies a general procedure for calculation of the steel weight reduction for the cases with different yield points and extension of KF-steel has been developed.
