THE PRIMARY ROAD NETWORK - TARGETS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

This document discusses the progress towards building 3500 miles of strategic trunk roads. It notes the cuts in road investment over the years 1973 to 1978. The programme is based on six aims relating to environmental improvement, economic growth, linking remote regions, major towns and major ports and airports, and the relief of historic towns of through traffic. Definitions are given of terms used. The network is examined on a regional basis diving maps of each, with route details and progress. An addendum is included noting further cuts and delay to the network's completion, though the programme now emphasizes heavy lorry routes. It also warns of the effects of these reductions on maintaining construction teams. Details of schemes delayed or omitted are given. /TRRL/
