ACCOMMODATING THE PEDESTRIAN: ADAPTING TOWNS AND NEIGHBOURHOODS FOR WALKING AND BICYCLING

This book makes recommendations for improvement of the American street through the comparative analysis of American and European land use and cultural and political practices. The book identifies factors that affect the behaviour and attitudes of people travelling on foot. It suggests a variety of remedies which can be used in adapting towns and neighbourhoods, including business and suburban environments, for walking and bicycling. The author covers: general pedestrian planning and design approaches; pedestrian and bicycle circulation requirements; places that have been successfully pedestrianized; how and why people walk, and characteristics that enhance walking; how to assure the safety of bicyclists; how to enhance pedestrian and bicycle circulation in residential and business areas; how to improve integration of pedestrian flow into suburban communities and shopping centres.
