EVALUATION OF THE JULY 1980 MERCER METRO (TRENTON, NJ) FARE INCREASE. FINAL REPORT

This report evaluates certain effects of a July 1980 fare increase on Mercer Metro ridership. The evaluation addresses aggregate ridership change as well as effects on individual transit user groups. The scope of this analysis was governed by a set of cross-tabulations derived from the original survey data. More extensive analysis would be possible with a more complete compilation of information contained in the original surveys. The ability to draw definitive conclusions about the influence of the fare hike was also inhibited by the influence of a gasoline crisis and high gasoline prices around the time of the fare increase. It appears, however, that the presence of high gas prices did not fully offset ridership losses brought on by the fare increase. Price-demand elasticity estimates appear to be slightly lower than would otherwise be expected, although the sample size on which these estimates are based is relatively small.
