A HELPING HAND FOR BUSES. COMPUTER PACKAGE FOR GIVING PRIORITY TO BUSES AT TRAFFIC SIGNALS
This brief article described a computer package, costing L800 and marketed by Sarasota Automation, which gives buses the green light at traffic signals. The system uses standard traffic signals and requires no equipment on board the buses -loop detectors are buried in the road on the approaches to every set of traffic signals. There is a two way connection between the induction coils and a single computer board at the side of the road. When a vehicle approaches the traffic lights, a characteristic current is induced in the buried coil. This is fed to the computer and compared with stored "templates" of current versus time that are characteristic of various vehicles. If the computer board identifies the vehicle as a bus, it turns the traffic lights green.
