AERODYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS ON PASSENGER COACHES IN A WIND TUNNEL WITH A MOVING FLOOR

AERODYNAMISCHE MESSUNGEN AN REISEZUGWAGEN IM WINDKANAL MIT LAUFENDEM BODEN

The authors describe wind tunnel measurements on 1:20 scale model railway coaches with and without bottom closure. Since the wind tunnel has a moving floor, good agreement with original measurements of the c//1 value for passenger coaches was obtained. A modified formula for determining the running resistance of IC trains is given on the basis of these results and the Hannover formula for air resistance, and is compared with other calculations. With the aid of this formula a rough estimate is made of the energy saving attainable by employing coaches with bottom closure on the DB's IC services. A performance comparison is also made with the aerodynamic ideal form of the ICE experimental vehicle. (Author abstract)
