THE ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY OF TURNOUTS AND CROSSOVERS
Before being embedded in an alignment axis, the general (basic) form of the turnouts (switches) is described numerically, allowing the placing of the turnout to be reduced to geometric transformations. The placing of a cross-over presents a computing task. Several specific points in the resulting geometric configuration (such as prinicipal points, skeleton of tangents and shunting limit signal) have to be calculated numerically. By introducing certain conventions, the derived formulae were integrated in a computer programme which is in use with SBB and greatly facilitates the work of SBB's surveyors for the planning of track alignments.
