AN EXAMINATION OF THE COST STRUCTURES ASSOCIATED WITH PROVIDING URBAN BUS SERVICES IN BRITAIN
The paper examines the underlying cost structure associated with supplying urban bus services in Great Britain. A transcendental logarithmic cost model is employed and parameters estimated using data for 1980. It is found that the unrestricted functional form provides the most satisfactory statistical framework. A number of hypotheses regarding the impact of subsidies, peak intensity, and political influences are tested. There is evidence that diseconomies of scale are a characteristic of the largest undertakings.
