SYSTEMS ENGINEERING ENSURES ELECTRICAL COMPATIBILITY IN SEOUL
Construction of Lines 3 and 4 and the Seoul Subway involved electrical and mechanical contracts which were included under a Joint Agreement for the Total System. The participants were GEC Transportation Projects as managing contractor and carbuilder; Westinghouse Electric, the electrical power equipment supplier; and Union Switch & Signal, signal and communications suppliers, along with the 3 Korean associates of these companies. The joint agreement committed contractors to an engineering program that would insure compatibility between electrical and mechanical systems. Neither the transit agency nor a consultant were involved in this compatibility study as is usually the case. Two comprehensive power studies showed the effects of train operation on the power supply and of the power system on train performance. These computer simulations allowed all types of emergency situations to be investigated. Protection, ground currents, cab signal interference and other electromagnetic compatibility problems were all subjected to study.
