BUILDING AFRICA'S FIRST METRO
A rapid transit system for Cairo, Egypt, is nearing completion. After extensive studies, the project got under way in 1981. Cut and cover tunneling is being utilized through busy streets in terrain which is below the water table. Two suburban lines of the Egyptian National Railways are linked by the 4.5-km tunnel section to produce the new transit operation which covers 42.5km. Details of contracts and construction are given.
