TRAMS IN THE METRO
Netherlands is coming to look at light rail as the transit of the future. Rotterdam and Amsterdam are adopting an unusual blend of surface and underground operation to exploit their investment in downtown tunnels while utilizing a lower-cost mode outside the central city. In both cities light rail vehicles, equipped to collect power from third rail in tunnels and by pantograph on the surface, are able to operate in both modes. Rapid transit stations have two-level platforms accommodating regular rapid transit trains and the light rail vehicles. Utrecht and The Hague are also continuing to expand their surface light rail systems. LRV is showing steady gains in ridership generally and increasing popularity among urban planners.
