METRO UPDATE: BUSWAYS
This survey of busways in the U.S. also traces the history of the concept. Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority introduced the concept with the paving of an abandoned streecar right-of-way in 1967. Following this was the building of the Shirley Highway busway in suburban Virginia approaching Washington, D.C. In this period high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) and exclusive bus lanes were established on major corridor highways in other metropolitan areas. The article describes the Los Angeles El Monte Busway, Pittsburgh's East Busway and work currently going ahead in Houston, TX, and Seattle, WA. Houston is building 65 miles of busways on several different alignments. Seattle is building a busway tunnel beneath the central business district with several subway stations that will be served by dual-mode buses which will operate as trolley buses in the tunnel and revert to diesel operation as they emerge on city streets and arterial highways. A number of the busways are being designed for eventual conversion to light rail transit.
