ANALYTICAL STUDY OF FATAL ACCIDENTS ON SUPER HIGHWAY: 3-SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

In this concluding paper on the Analytical Study of Fatal Accidents on the Pakistan Super Highway, outlines of some short and long term safety improvements are suggested for the Highway. The essential features of these improvements are the expansion of the Highway and making it a dual-carriageway with central island and fencing in the middle. Further improvements include, controlled access, pedestrian crossings, flyover on level crossing, measures for elimination of monotonous nature of long straight sections, use of traffic control lines and guide posts, lighting of high hazard locations, restricting speeds and prohibiting the slow moving vehicles from the Highway. The paper also suggests the coordination of traffic engineering with traffic law enforcement and traffic education to the roadusers which works well in saving lives and reducing injuries. Nevertheless, the emphasis has been laid on implementation of low-cost, high-benefit improvements. (Author)
