STEP TOWARD INCREASED PROFITABILITY - THE HEAVY DUTY GAS TURBINE POWERED ULCC

The authors based the paper on a ULCC of 500,000 deadweight tons utilizing a gas turbine electric propulsion system of 50,000 shaft horsepower. This system consists of a single General Electric Marine Heavy Duty Gas Turbine driving a synchronous generator supplying power to a synchronous propulsion motor. The motor drives a fixed pitch propeller operating at 85.7 RPM. The entire power plant is designed for unattended operation with control located at the bridge console. The basic propulsion system is shown in schematic. This unique propulsion system arrangement results in an equally unique shipboard arrangement which offers many economic advantages to the owner.
