UTILIZATION OF LEAD ACCUMULATORS IN RAIL VEHICLES

The reactions of the system lead accumulator caused by external discharging and charging processes permit the description of the characteristics which influence the service life of a battery. This results in special demands on charging. The development of batteries for passenger coaches is characterized by the transition to block construction and carrier construction. Also in this case the charging technique needs special attention. A further application are the big starter batteries of Diesel locomotives. By maintenance reduction the economics can be improved. It is pointed out that nickel-cadmium accumulators are not suitable for this field of application. (Edited author abstract)
