TRANSPORTATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN DOWNTOWN NEW ORLEANS

Just as the port and railroad activities have shaped the development of the city, the local transportation system has shaped the city's Central Business District (CBD). This article will examine those transportation-related factors that have shaped office, commercial, and retail development in the New Orleans CBD. In 1957, the Central Area Committee of the Chamber of Commerce helped sponsor the development of "A Prospectus for Revitalizing New Orleans' Central Business District." The basic tenet of the Prospectus was the development of an expressway loop serving the CBD and the various major land uses in the area. Another concept detailed in the Prospectus was that public transit be used to service all land uses in the CBD.
