TRAVEL REGULARITIES AND THEIR INTERPRETATIONS: A DISCUSSION PAPER
The regularities in travel behavior analyses are examined in this paper. Reasons are investigated for different interpretations of travel regularities caused by (1) differences in basic assumptions, model specification, and selection of analysis unit; (b) differences in selection and evaluation of empirical material; and (c) differences of data used. Criteria for evaluation of meaningfulness and applicability of travel regularities are proposed. Travel-time budget analyses and studies of travel behavior of homogeneous groups of persons are compared as alternative approaches to investigate differences in travel regularities and diversity of their interpretations.
