SAFETY OF MERCHANT SEAMEN. CODE OF SAFE WORKING PRACTICES AND REPORT OF STEERING COMMITTEE
A British Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen has been published together with the Report by the Steering Committee on the Safety of Merchant Seamen. The purpose of the code is to give authoritative guidance on procedures on board merchant ships for the occupational safety of seamen. The publication consists of a loose-leaf binder divided into 10 sections addressed to owners and masters and to officers (deck and engineer) and rating (deck, machinery spaces and catering) according to their duties. Explicit recommendations are made on the numerous facets of the more important operations carried out and on related matters. The main recommendations are summarized.
