AIR CONDITIONING BY EVAPORATION
The dry climate of the Intermountain West makes possible lower-cost air conditioning for transit applications through use of evaporative cooling. After UMTA-sponsored tests, the Rapid Transit District of Denver, CO, has retrofitted 109 buses with the system. A 100-gallon water tank with pump is installed under the bus. The cooling use, mounted on the roof, contains a media over which water is sprayed as air is drawn through. This process also serves to humidify the air. Air is then distributed through the regular bus duct system.
